Scientific Name: Draco Frigidium

Common Name: Ice Dragon

Habitat: The northern realm; confined solely to regions ever bound by glacial ice or snow--whether caused by latitude or altitude.

General Description

Draco Frigidium is generally known as one of the larger dragon types, ranging from approximately two meters high in the case of fresh-water Ice Dragons to as much as twenty meters in length for those magnificent all-white and crystal-clawed kings of the glacial north. Though large in stature, these dragons are surprisingly light in weight due to special adaptations which have allowed them to survive the rigors of dreadful cold. Their scales, for instance, though often appearing white, are in reality crystal clear but filled with tiny air pockets. Resembling more some precious frozen sea-foam or icy glass than true scales, they both help insulate against the cold and lighten the body so that movement through powder snow and upon glacial or pond-water ice is made much less hazardous than would otherwise be the case. Some Ice dragons even appear to have colored scales, but this is actually because blue sky tends to reflect as blue near the scale root and that direct sunlight, when striking these scales at an angle of less than twenty degrees, will refract into a brilliant rainbow spectra--a rare and most remarkable sight indeed. On the other hand, there is little remarkable about the temperament of these dragons. Neither jovial nor sour, they tend toward a rather stolid indifference of a hermit-crab, no doubt a natural consequence of their isolated existence. They are not quick to anger but can cause considerable damage if threatened--ranging from glacial fracture to avalanche--and are therefore best treated with respectful consideration and deference.
